What would be the greatest gift for the pet that day after day gives nothing but love and companionship? Come to A.D.O.P.T. on December 3rd ! On December 3rd, A.D.O.P.T. Pet Shelter will be having its Annual Holiday Cookie Walk and More! There will be homemade cookies, cookie bars, candies and so much more! It will be a delight for you and a real joy for your companion to come out to socialize with other pets just like them! This will take place from 9:00am-1:00pm. Find time to stop by and enjoy a cookie and a good time! This activity will definitely be more than worth it. If you’re looking for something to do on December 3rd and have a great time. It will take place at the Fifth Avenue Station, 200 East.Fifth Avenue, Naperville, Illinois. The donations that are made for this event will solely be used to benefit the animals that have been left without a home for the holiday season. These donations will help benefit A.D.O.P.T Pet Shelter and assist them with going these friendly animals a good life until ready for the ultimate happiness of adoption. Also, stay tuned to other cool and exciting activities that A.D.O.P.T has to offer.
We are almost at these upcoming events therefore make sure you get your spot and ensure that you and your favorite pet or even pets, have an amazing, howling and catifying holiday. PETS IN FILM! *NOVEMBER*

Anyone who knows me, knows that I am a film buff! Since we are advocating for animals in the United States to find homes and encouraging people to go and adopt animals and give them loving homes, I thought we would combine the two. I have watched thousands of movies and growing up until now, a couple of animals really stuck with me from films I have seen. I thought I would share a few:

1. SHILOH: This movie meant a lot to me because I read the book when I was a little girl and then of course saw the movie. This movie is about a little boy who stumbles across a dog who he finds is being abused by his mean owner. The beagle, Shiloh, runs away from his owner and meets Marty then follows the boy home. He father wont let him keep the dog, so he hides Shiloh in fear that he will be returned to his abuse owner. I remember being really upset how cruel his owner was to him and if this is any indication of what we at A.D.O.P.T. Pet Shelter are trying to work against, then everyone should want to help out our cause.

2. OLD YELLER: This 1957 Disney film about a “yeller’-colored stray dog that befriends a family. In the film, Yeller develops rabies after defending the family from a wolf. The film culminates with a famously heartbreaking scene that involves Yeller being put to sleep because after a long dog life with his little boy master, he becomes very ill. Nevertheless, it is a great movie about an abandoned dog finds a loving home.

3. MARLEY & ME: This movie was so incredibly cute and if you have seen this movie that I KNOW you cried at the end. This movie is based on the New York Times bestselling autobiography “Marley & Me”. It stars Owen Wilson and Jennifer Anniston as two newlyweds who find a abandoned dog being sold on the side of the street. They take him home and eventually find that he is a handful to deal with. Throughout their life he becomes a member of the family and despite he outrageous behavior, they love him all the same.

The Festival of Lights!

Come one, Come all to the annual FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS!!!

A.D.O.P.T. Pet Shelter is continuing it tradition of the “FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS,” providing the opportunity for pet lovers and A.D.O.P.T. supporters to honor of memorialize loved ones and special pets through a tribute light on our Festival of Lights Celebration Tree. The celebration is special to the town of Naperville, Illinois because it brings the community together.

The FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS CELEBRATION TREE will be illuminated on December 3rd with ornaments personalized with the name of a person of pet being celebrated or memorialized. Rather than purchase a gift for everyone on your holiday shopping list, perhaps a donation to A.D.O.P.T. on their behalf is a consideration. An acknowledgement of your donation in their name will be sent to them.

Lights/ribbons may be ordered through December 24th. Requests for acknowledgement to another person must be received by December 19th to ensure delivery by December 25th.

Tribute lights may be reserved for a donation of $10 per light/ribbon. The white lights honor the memory of loved ones, colored lights honor those living, and red ribbons honor those serving in the military.

For each individual or pet, select a light or ribbon from the list, then name the animal and relationship of the individual or pet to be acknowledged in the spaces provided. You may also have an acknowledgement of the tribute sent to another person.

In the spirit of the holiday season, we here at the ADOPT Pet Shelter blog wanted to get you into the spirit before getting into December. So you can bring in the holiday month with tons and tons of joy already in effect and ready to spread. Above is just one of the many video clips we would like for you to not only watch, but to enjoy and experience. By entering the month of December with joy on your heart you are prepared to show an abundance of love to others, your pets and and most importantly you. In looking at quote given by Oprah Winfrey, an avid dog lover and the owner of two beautiful golden labordor retrievers, we found that she believes in everyone should “Be responsible for the energy they bring into a room.” With this, she means that the outcome of prior months and prior situations should not carry into today attitude. Live in the present is something she also focuses on. We wanted to bring some of this joy by showing this cute and adorable, yet hilarious videos on different pets dressed up in christmas apparel.

THE ANNUAL HOLIDAY COOKIE WALK

I HOPE YOU GUYS LIKE COOKIES!

A.D.O.P.T. Pet Shelter is hosting its annual HOLIDAY COOKIE WALK & MORE, on Saturday, December 3rd, 2011 from 9:00am-1:00pm at Naperville’s Fifth Avenue Station. The fifth avenue station is located on 200 E. Fifth Avenue. Last year’s Holiday Cookie walk was a huge success with plenty of great home-made cookies and candies. The year A.D.O.P.T. Pet Shelter is hoping to make it even better! The walk will be held once again in the lobby of the Fifth Avenue Station.

There will also be a variety of cookies prepackaged for those who can not stay for the entire walk but need to get in and get out quickly. 100% of the proceeds from this fundraiser will help to make the holidays a lot happier for the homeless/ abandoned animals of A.D.O.P.T. Pet Shelter. In addition to homemade cookies, there will also be dog treats, A.D.O.P.T. t-shirts & sweatshirts, and Entertainment Coupon Books.

A.D.O.P.T. Pet Shelter is working hard to make sure this is the biggest and best Cookie Walk ever, so your efforts are needed to help spread the word. Be sure to contact A.D.O.P.T. Pet Shelter for Cookie Walk flyers if you are able to post them at your places of work or play. The cookies that are sold, the more the animals we an help place into wonderful homes this Holiday!

ADOPT A Pet Video- Morgan Prewitt

What is the ultimate purpose in life? To give? To live an let live? To Love? to find new ways of exploring life? All of these as well as some of these may be true depending on the type of person you are. By giving adopting a dog or a cat that is without a home you are fulfilling the purpose of giving, through giving love and a home to that pet. You are fulfilling a purpose of living and let life because the quality of your life will increase due to a new character in your life that you can take care of and enjoy some quality time with, all the time– a loyal companion as well as you are fulfilling the purpose of finding love when adopting a pet and showing the unconditional love that you’ve always wanted to give.

This media clip/video focuses on how to go about adopting a pet and the correct ways to go through the process. Adoption is definitely not a hard or long process but there is a little bit of research that must be done before going through the process. Take note of the video and how you want to make sure you ar adopting the right dog for you. As mentioned you dont want to adopt an agressive dog if you have small children, or if you are looking for an intimidating dog, maybe a small dog isnt for you. Also in addtion to the different dog choices that there is for you to adopt, make sure that you have the necessary procedures done to the dogs if they have not already been done.

My Pet Experience

When I was a little girl, one of my major highlights of my childhood was having my two dogs Sugar and Spice. They were two German pit bulls and I loved them very much. My parents were in the military so when we were in Germany they figured I needed something to help brightened my mood, so they got my two puppies. At first, I as very apprehensive because I knew that these dogs would grow up to be big and I had a terrible fear of big dogs. However, when my dad was around my age, he took a small job at a veterinarian office and learned a lot about animals. He immediately took on the job of “dog trainer” and began teaching my dogs everything they needed to know to be great protect dogs. He also gave them all of their shots and kept them up-to-date. He began my training them by using my mom and I and making sure they knew who we were and that we were not threats to them. Also, he trained them with our pictures so that they could recognize us in any situation. Next, he taught them command words and taught them how to immediately respond to them. He taught us words like “Stop” and “Come Here” in German so that we would be able to communicate with the dog in another language (which proved to be very beneficial when we moved back to the United States).

My dogs grew up to be very trained and respectful and when we moved back to the United States, we often put on little show with my dogs for our family because my dad also taught my dogs how to jump really high and move large tires. It was a wonderful experience but eventually both of my dogs died. It was sad but the time I spent with them was great. I know this sounds weird but they were so intelligent and the were awesome friends.

Pet Statistics! part 2

In order to increase awareness of the current state of cats and dogs in the United States, A.D.O.P.T. Pet Shelter likes to keep people updated with pet statistics. Also, with the upcoming holidays, we threw in holiday statistics as well to spread some holiday cheer. Some pet statistics about pets in the United States are as follows:

-57% of American households today own either a dog or cat
-Dogs households outnumber cat households, there are more cats (64.1 million) than dogs (63.8 million) in the United States.
-Cat owners tend to have more animals than dog owners on average- 2.1 cats compared with 1.5 dogs per household.
-9 out of 10 per owners surveyed say they consider their pet a member of the family.
-63% of dog owners and 58% of cat owners surveyed said they give their pets presents at Christmas.
-Americans spend about $5 billion on holiday presents for their furry friends.
-40% of dog owners and 37% of cat owners hang Christmas stockings for their pets.

We hope these pet statistics help you want to consider adopting a dog or cat so that you can share in the holiday’s spirit with a pet that you can love of your very own.
